About Us

Commander James Santangelo
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9617 was founded November of 1947 by the Veterans of World War II. It has provided services for our Veterans who fought for our freedom and to preserve democracy. We must never forget the importance of honoring those who risked their lives to rescue our planet by defeating the Axis Powers and other apostles of despotism.

Today 67 years later joined by Veterans of the Korean, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars, members of Post 9617 continue to provide services to our veterans visiting local hospitals and nursing homes, distributing clothing, blankets, and other necessities. Many Veterans live alone and are in the need of a helping hand paying their electric, gas and fuel oil bills. Supplies such as hand and foot warmers, ingredients to make baked goods, clothing, sports equipment, books and magazines are purchased for packages to be sent overseas to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For Memorial Day Post 9617 with the help of volunteers plant over 4,300 American Flags on Veteran’s Graves in the City of Stamford.
Our members not only assist Veterans in need.  We also visit schools, participate in public events.
Our mission is to make the public aware of the role we veterans play in the City of Stamford and surrounding towns and cities.

It is important to honor the commitments made by veterans not only n Memorial Day or Veterans Day.  But everyday.

Enjoy our blog and visit often. We have a new website, in beta phase, at www.vfw9617.org.

Sincerely,

COMMANDER
